Croatian Firefighting Museum

The Croatian Firefighting Museum is one of Varaždin’s most distinctive institutions, celebrating more than a century of organised firefighting in Croatia. Founded in 1957, it is the only museum of its kind in the country, preserving the heritage of volunteer brigades that played a crucial role in protecting towns from devastating fires—especially important in Varaždin, a city that historically suffered several major blazes. Inside, visitors can explore an impressive collection of firefighting equipment. Early hand‑pumped engines, brass nozzles, leather water buckets, and beautifully crafted helmets show how firefighting evolved from simple community efforts to a disciplined, technical profession. One of the most interesting exhibits is a fully preserved 19th‑century horse‑drawn fire engine, still gleaming with polished metal and woodwork. Uniforms from different eras reveal changing styles and materials, from heavy wool tunics to modern protective gear. Photographs and documents trace the growth of local brigades, highlighting heroic interventions and the social role firefighters played in community life. Children especially enjoy the model fire trucks and interactive displays explaining how equipment works.
