Holy Trinity Cathedral Ruse

Holy Trinity Cathedral in Ruse is one of Bulgaria’s oldest active churches, a quiet landmark that predates much of the city’s modern architecture. Built in 1632 during Ottoman rule, it originally stood partly underground—an architectural trick that allowed Christian worship while keeping a low profile. Its modest exterior hides a surprisingly atmospheric interior shaped by centuries of additions, restorations, and local craftsmanship. Inside, the cathedral’s most striking feature is its richly carved wooden iconostasis, created by Tryavna masters in the 19th century. The icons themselves form a small gallery of Bulgarian religious art, with vivid colours and expressive faces typical of the National Revival period. The church also preserves a rare stone slab from 1740 commemorating local donors, a tangible link to Ruse’s early Christian community. Look for the discreetly placed bell tower: it was added only after the Ottoman ban on church bells was lifted, giving the cathedral its current silhouette. Visitors often note the serene acoustics, especially during liturgy, and the subtle scent of old wood and incense that gives the space its timeless character.
