State Puppet Theater

State Puppet Theater Ruse is one of the city’s most charming cultural institutions, a place where imagination has been staged for more than six decades. Founded in 1955, it quickly became known for its innovative puppetry techniques and for nurturing generations of Bulgarian performers. The building itself is modest, but inside it holds a world of colour, craftsmanship and theatrical magic. The main hall is intimate, designed to bring audiences close to the action. Its stage is equipped with specialised rigging that allows for marionettes, rod puppets and shadow theatre, making it one of Bulgaria’s most versatile puppet venues. Visitors often notice the beautifully crafted puppets displayed in the foyer—some of them decades old, with expressive faces and intricate costumes that reveal the artistry behind each production. The theatre also preserves a small workshop where puppet makers carve heads, paint details and assemble mechanisms, offering a glimpse into a craft rarely seen up close.
