About

Citadela is Budva’s most commanding landmark, a fortified complex that crowns the southern edge of the Old Town. Its origins reach back to medieval defensive structures, but the citadel gained its present form during the 19th century under Austrian rule, when Budva was part of the coastal fortification network guarding the Adriatic. Today it stands as both a historical monument and one of the best viewpoints in the city. Inside, visitors can explore thick stone corridors, restored ramparts, and small exhibition rooms that present Budva’s maritime past. The library hall is particularly atmospheric: its walls are lined with old nautical charts and books that evoke centuries of Adriatic navigation. A collection of archaeological fragments—carved stones, inscriptions, and remnants of earlier fortifications—reveals how many layers of history lie beneath the citadel’s current structure. The Citadel of Budva stands at the southern tip of the Old Town, right where the ancient walls meet the sea.
