Church of St. Sava the Sanctified

Church of St. Sava the Sanctified is one of Budva’s lesser‑known but most charming sacred sites, standing just outside the Old Town walls. Built in the early 19th century, it served the small Orthodox community living beyond the fortified core. Its simple stone façade and modest bell gable reflect the traditional coastal style, giving the church an intimate, village‑like character despite its proximity to the bustling centre. Inside, the church preserves a compact iconostasis with 19th‑century icons painted in warm tones typical of local workshops. Their expressive faces and gentle colours create a welcoming atmosphere. A small collection of liturgical objects—silver crosses, embroidered vestments, and handwritten service books—offers insight into everyday religious life in Budva before tourism transformed the town. Visitors also notice fragments of older masonry incorporated into the walls, suggesting that an earlier chapel may have stood on the same spot.
