Fort Mogren

About

Fort Mogren is one of Budva’s most atmospheric military relics, a hidden fortress perched above the cliffs west of the Old Town. Built by the Austrians in the mid‑19th century, it formed part of a coastal defense network designed to control the approaches to the Adriatic. Though partially ruined today, the fort retains its dramatic position overlooking Mogren Beach and the open sea, making it a favourite stop for explorers who enjoy combining history with scenery. Inside the remaining structure, visitors can walk through stone corridors, roofless chambers, and narrow passages that once housed soldiers and artillery. The observation platforms still offer excellent views, revealing why this location was strategically vital. You can also see fragments of old gun emplacements and ventilation shafts, small details that hint at the fort’s original engineering. What makes Fort Mogren especially appealing is its raw, untouched character. Unlike Budva’s citadel, this site has been left largely as it was found, giving it an adventurous feel.

Fort Mogren
Location

Fort Mogren sits on Spas Hill above Mogren Beach, roughly a kilometre west of Budva’s Old Town. Built in the 1860s by the Austro-Hungarian authorities, the ruined stone fortress still commands wide views over the Adriatic and the Budva Riviera. Just below the hill you’ll find the two sheltered coves of Mogren Beach, linked by a short tunnel through the rock and reached by a pleasant coastal path from the Old Town. From the fort itself you look out across the sea towards Sveti Nikola Island and back towards the walls and Citadel of the historic centre. A short distance further along the coast lies Jaz Beach, while the Old Town’s churches, museum and narrow lanes remain an easy walk or short drive away. The remains of the fort are open and largely unrestored, so you can wander the walls and take in the panorama at your own pace before heading down to the beach or continuing into the Old Town.
