Holy Trinity Church Budva

Holy Trinity Church is one of Budva’s most recognisable landmarks, standing just steps from the sea inside the Old Town. Completed in 1804, it reflects the late‑Byzantine style favoured by coastal Orthodox communities, with its distinctive striped façade of alternating red and white stone. The church became a cultural hub in the 19th century, attracting writers, diplomats, and travellers who documented Budva’s life before modern tourism reshaped the coast. Inside, the church is warm and richly decorated. The iconostasis, carved from dark wood, holds vivid 19th‑century icons painted by Greek and local artists. Their bright colours and expressive faces give the interior a lively character. A highlight is the tomb of Stefan Mitrov Ljubiša, one of Montenegro’s most important writers and politicians, whose memorial plaque stands near the entrance. Visitors can also see liturgical books and silver vessels, small but elegant pieces that reveal Budva’s religious traditions. Holy Trinity remains an active parish church, and its calm interior offers a welcome contrast to the busy streets outside.
