Ethnographic Museum of Gjirokastër is set inside one of the city’s most atmospheric houses, built on the foundations of Enver Hoxha’s birthplace. Its most interesting feature is how it recreates the daily life of a wealthy Gjirokastër family from the 18th and 19th centuries, offering a vivid sense of how people cooked, celebrated, worked, and welcomed guests in a traditional stone‑roofed home. Inside, visitors move through a sequence of beautifully preserved rooms. The oda, or guest room, is the highlight: wide sofas, carved wooden ceilings, embroidered textiles, and decorative niches show the elegance of local craftsmanship. The women’s quarters display weaving tools, jewellery, and household objects that reveal the rhythms of domestic life. In the kitchen, copper pots, wooden utensils, and a large hearth illustrate how meals were prepared in a time before modern conveniences. Throughout the house, you’ll find displays of regional costumes, weapons, musical instruments, and everyday items that trace Gjirokastër’s blend of Ottoman and Albanian traditions.

Gjirokastër Albania

Location

It is located at Rruga Hysen Hoxha 3, 6001 Gjirokaster, Albania, right in the old historic center. The museum is built on the site of the former house of Enver Hoxha and it was reconstructed in 1966 as a typical Gjirokaster house, so it is itself a beautiful example of local architecture with stone walls and wooden interiors. Inside you see traditional rooms, old costumes, kitchen tools, looms, furniture and everyday objects that show the lifestyle of a wealthy 19th century family. It is not huge but very authentic and easy to imagine life there. You are in the middle of the UNESCO old town. Just a few minutes walk away you have Skenduli House at Rruga Palorto, one of the best preserved Ottoman palaces in town with amazing painted ceilings. Close by is also the house of Ismail Kadare at Rruga Fato Berberi 16, the famous Albanian writer, now a museum. Up the hill you have Gjirokaster Castle at Rruga Gjin Bue Shpata, one of the biggest castles in the Balkans. Inside the castle you can visit the National Museum of Arms and the Gjirokaster Museum, plus the old prison. Right below the castle is the Cold War Tunnel at Rruga Gjin Zenebisi, a huge secret bunker from the communist period.
