Nostalgia Tunnel in Gjirokastër is a playful, immersive tribute to Albania’s recent past, turning a former Cold War shelter into a vivid time capsule. Unlike the city’s darker underground sites, this tunnel celebrates everyday life from the 1960s to the late communist era, blending humor, memory, and social history. Its long corridors lead visitors through themed rooms filled with objects that once defined daily routines: rotary phones, radios, enamel kitchenware, school notebooks, and the unmistakable aesthetics of state‑produced furniture. One of the most engaging sections is the “living room of the era,” arranged with patterned carpets, heavy sofas, and a television broadcasting archival footage. Another highlight is the music corner, where vinyl records and posters evoke the cultural tastes of a generation raised on state‑approved entertainment. The tunnel also includes installations that recreate shops, offices, and domestic spaces, each offering a snapshot of how people worked, socialized, and adapted to a tightly controlled society.

Location

The Nostalgia Tunnel sits along Rruga Shezai Çomo in Gjirokastër, right on the edge of the old town near the bazaar. It’s a short underground passage from the communist years that a local collector has filled with everyday objects, tools, photos and relics from different periods of Albanian life. You’re already close to the heart of the stone city here. A short walk brings you into the Old Bazaar with its narrow lanes and traditional shops. From there it’s an easy climb up to Gjirokastër Castle, the big fortress that dominates the skyline and holds the museum of armaments plus wide views over the valley. Just around the corner is the Cold War Tunnel Museum, another underground site from the same era. The Ethnographic Museum and Ismail Kadare’s House are also nearby in the historic neighbourhoods, and a little further on you can reach the well-preserved Skenduli House and the grand Zekate House.
