Fico House in Gjirokastër is one of the city’s most elegant Ottoman‑era residences, known for its refined architecture and the quiet sense of grandeur that still fills its rooms. Built in the 18th century for the influential Fico family, the house stands out for its tall stone façade, finely carved wooden details, and the distinctive “tower house” silhouette typical of Gjirokastër’s merchant elite. Its interior preserves a rare blend of domestic comfort and ceremonial space, offering a window into how wealthy families lived in a fortified hillside town. Inside, visitors can explore reception rooms decorated with painted ceilings, ornate fireplaces, and traditional divans arranged along the walls. The women’s quarters, with their delicate wooden latticework, reveal the social customs of the period. One of the most interesting features is the çardak, an upper‑floor loggia that frames sweeping views of the old bazaar and the valley beyond. The house also displays household objects, textiles, and tools that illustrate daily life, from food preparation to craftsmanship.

Location

Fico House stands on Rruga Fato Berberi in the historic Palorto neighbourhood of Gjirokastër’s old town. You’ll recognise it by its distinctive yellow façade, a bit different from the usual grey stone houses around here. It once belonged to a well-known local family and still shows the classic Ottoman-era style mixed with later details. You’re right in the middle of the best part of the stone city. Just a short walk away is Ismail Kadare’s House, the childhood home of the famous writer that is now a small museum. The Ethnographic Museum is also nearby, and from there you can easily reach the beautifully preserved Skenduli House. Keep going and you’ll hit the Old Bazaar with its shops and cafés under heavy slate roofs. A bit of an uphill stroll brings you to Gjirokastër Castle, the big fortress that looks out over the whole valley and holds the museum of armaments. The grand Zekate House and the Cold War Tunnel are not far either.
