Gjirokastër Castle

About

Gjirokastër Castle is the city’s defining landmark, a massive stone fortress that dominates the skyline and offers one of the most atmospheric historical experiences in southern Albania. Its origins stretch back to the 12th century, but most of what visitors see today was expanded under Ottoman rule, giving the castle its imposing walls, long corridors, and dramatic cliff‑edge terraces. Inside, the complex feels like a small fortified town. One of the most intriguing sights is the former prison, used during both Ottoman and communist periods, where narrow cells and heavy doors reveal the building’s layered past. The castle also houses an open‑air artillery gallery featuring cannons from different eras, including a captured American fighter plane displayed as Cold War propaganda. The National Arms Museum, set within vaulted stone chambers, showcases weapons ranging from medieval swords to 20th‑century rifles, illustrating Albania’s turbulent military history. Visitors can explore underground passages, cisterns, and lookout points that frame sweeping views of the Drino Valley. The upper terraces are especially memorable at sunset, when the entire city glows beneath the fortress.

Location

Gjirokastër Castle sits high on the rocky hill that dominates the city, at Rruga Elvia Celebi in Gjirokastër. It’s one of the largest fortresses in the Balkans and gives you sweeping views across the Drino Valley and the stone rooftops below. Once you’re up here the whole old town is spread out at your feet. A short walk downhill brings you straight into the Old Bazaar with its narrow lanes, shops and cafés under those heavy slate roofs. Just below the castle entrance is the Cold War Tunnel Museum, the underground bunker that once served the local communist elite. Keep wandering the steep cobbled streets and you’ll reach the Ethnographic Museum, Ismail Kadare’s House and the well-preserved Skenduli House, all close together in the historic neighbourhoods. A little further on is the distinctive yellow Fico House and the grand Zekate House.
