Liqeni i Viroit Spring is one of Gjirokastër’s most enchanting natural sites, a deep turquoise pool fed by powerful underground springs at the foot of the Drino Valley. Locals have long considered it a place of mystery: the water is so clear that you can see straight to the rocky bottom, yet the spring itself is incredibly deep, creating shifting shades of blue and green that change with the light. Its temperature remains cold year‑round, giving the lake a crisp, almost alpine character despite the Mediterranean climate. Visitors can walk along the lakeside paths shaded by tall trees, where the sound of flowing water mixes with birdsong. The spring’s strongest outlet forms a small, lively stream that once powered local mills. One of the most interesting features is the way the water rises with visible force, creating gentle ripples even on windless days. The area is also home to diverse aquatic plants and fish, making it a peaceful spot for nature lovers.

Location

Liqeni i Viroit, or Viroi Lake and its spring, sits about three kilometres northwest of Gjirokastër, right beside the main road that leads toward Tepelenë. It’s a natural karst spring that forms a clear lake when the water is high, surrounded by greenery and a small park area popular with locals for a quiet break. From here the city is only a short distance away, either by a pleasant walk along the promenade or a quick ride. Head into town and you’ll soon reach Gjirokastër Castle, the large fortress that overlooks everything with its museum of armaments and wide valley views. Below the castle the Old Bazaar opens up with its stone shops and cafés. Nearby in the historic centre you can also visit the Cold War Tunnel Museum, the Ethnographic Museum, Ismail Kadare’s House and the well-preserved Skenduli House. The distinctive Fico House, the grand Zekate House and the older Church of the Holy Savior are all within easy reach once you’re back in the stone streets. The lake makes a nice natural contrast to the city’s Ottoman architecture, and the short trip out and back fits easily into a day of exploring the castle, the bazaar and the traditional houses of Gjirokastër.
