Ali Pasha Bridge

Ali Pasha Bridge is one of Gjirokastër’s most atmospheric relics, a graceful stone arch stretching across a quiet valley just outside the city. Built in the early 19th century as part of Ali Pasha Tepelena’s ambitious aqueduct system, the bridge once carried water from the nearby springs to the fortress above. Today, it stands alone, a beautifully preserved fragment of a much larger engineering project that showcased the pasha’s power and vision. What makes the bridge fascinating is its blend of elegance and practicality. The single arch rises high above the landscape, built from carefully cut limestone blocks that have survived two centuries of weather. Walking across it offers sweeping views of the surrounding hills, and the silence of the area gives the structure an almost mythical presence. Visitors can explore the base of the bridge, where the remains of the old aqueduct channels are still visible. The craftsmanship is remarkable: narrow conduits, precise stonework, and the strategic placement that allowed water to travel kilometres toward the castle. The site is especially atmospheric at sunset, when the arch casts long shadows across the valley.
