Shën Sotirit Church is one of Gjirokastër’s most serene landmarks, a hillside sanctuary that blends Byzantine tradition with the quiet character of the old town. Though modest in size, the church carries centuries of local devotion, reflected in its stone walls, wooden doors, and the gentle patina of age that gives the building its warm, lived‑in atmosphere. Inside, visitors find a surprisingly intimate space. The small nave is decorated with hand‑painted icons, many created by local artisans who followed regional styles rather than grand metropolitan schools. This gives the artwork a distinctive charm: expressive faces, bold colours, and storytelling scenes that feel rooted in village life. The iconostasis, carved in dark wood, is one of the church’s highlights, separating the altar with delicate floral and geometric motifs. Another interesting detail is the church’s acoustics. Its thick stone structure creates a soft echo that enhances the sound of liturgical chanting, making services particularly atmospheric. Outside, the courtyard offers peaceful views over the surrounding neighbourhood, often accompanied by the scent of nearby gardens.

Shën Sotirit, also known as the Church of the Holy Savior or Saint Sotir Church, stands on the steep slope just below Gjirokastër Castle, in the Old Bazaar neighbourhood of the historic centre. You’ll find it along the lanes near Rruga Doktor Kalivopulli, right under the Clock Tower that looks out over the stone rooftops. The church sits in the heart of the old town, so everything else is close by on foot. Straight up the hill is Gjirokastër Castle itself, the big fortress with its museum of armaments and wide views across the valley. A short stroll takes you into the Old Bazaar, full of traditional shops and cafés under those heavy slate roofs. Nearby you can also reach the Cold War Tunnel Museum, the Ethnographic Museum, Ismail Kadare’s House and the well-preserved Skenduli House. A little further on are the distinctive Fico House and the grand Zekate House. It’s all within the same compact historic quarter, so you can wander from the church up to the castle, through the bazaar and past the old stone houses without needing any transport. The setting feels quiet and atmospheric, right in the middle of the city’s layered history.
