The Orthodox Cathedral of Gjirokastër is one of the city’s most graceful modern landmarks, built in the early 1990s as Albania emerged from decades of religious suppression. Its architecture blends traditional Byzantine forms with clean contemporary lines, creating a bright, welcoming space that contrasts with the heavy stone buildings of the old town. The cathedral’s white façade and elegant bell tower make it instantly recognizable, especially when sunlight reflects off its tiled roof. Inside, the atmosphere is calm and luminous. The nave is filled with soft natural light, highlighting the colourful frescoes that depict saints, feast days, and scenes from the New Testament. These paintings are notable for their blend of classical iconographic style with a distinctly Albanian artistic touch. The iconostasis, carved from warm-toned wood, is one of the cathedral’s most striking features, separating the altar with intricate floral and geometric motifs. Visitors can also admire the large central chandelier, whose delicate metalwork adds a ceremonial glow to the interior. The cathedral’s acoustics make liturgical chanting particularly moving, giving services a resonant, enveloping quality.
Gjirokastër Albania
The Orthodox Cathedral of Gjirokastër, officially the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, sits in the lower part of the city in the 11 Janari neighbourhood, along the main road that runs through town. It’s a more recent building, completed in the last couple of decades, and stands out with its clean lines and tall bell tower. From here you’re a short walk or quick uphill stroll from the historic centre. Head up the cobbled streets and you’ll reach the Old Bazaar with its traditional shops and stone houses. A bit further brings you to Gjirokastër Castle, the big fortress that dominates the skyline and holds the museum of armaments. Nearby in the old town you can also visit the Cold War Tunnel Museum, the Ethnographic Museum, Ismail Kadare’s House and the well-preserved Skenduli House. The distinctive yellow Fico House and the grand Zekate House are close by as well, along with the older Church of the Holy Savior higher up the slope.
