The Icon Gallery of Ohrid is one of the most treasured cultural spaces in North Macedonia, a quiet sanctuary where centuries of devotion and artistry come together. Housed near the Church of St. Clement, the gallery preserves one of the richest collections of Orthodox icons in the Balkans, many dating from the 11th to the 19th century. Its atmosphere is hushed and contemplative, allowing visitors to appreciate the spiritual depth behind each painted face. Inside, the first highlight is the group of medieval icons created in Ohrid’s renowned workshop. These pieces, with their elongated figures and shimmering gold backgrounds, reflect the city’s role as a major center of Byzantine art. The icon of the Virgin Hodegetria is especially striking, known for its delicate lines and serene expression. Nearby, you’ll find icons of Christ Pantocrator, saints, and archangels, each painted with extraordinary precision. Another fascinating section showcases post‑Byzantine icons, where traditional techniques blend with local stylistic touches. The colors become warmer, the faces more expressive, and the decorative details richer. These works reveal how Ohrid’s artistic tradition evolved while remaining deeply rooted in Orthodox symbolism.

The Icon Gallery of Ohrid is tucked right in the old, historic part of town where everything is within walking distance. You will find it at Klimentov Univerzitet Street bb, inside the complex of the Church of St. Mary Perivlepta, 6000 Ohrid, North Macedonia. It is often just listed as Clement's University, Ohrid, because it sits in that old university area on the hill. The gallery itself is housed in the church, which makes the visit even more special. The collection inside is one of the most important in the region, with incredible Byzantine icons, but outside you are in the heart of Ohrid's UNESCO old town. Just a minute away is the National Ohrid Museum in the Robevci House, a beautiful old Ottoman townhouse that now shows archaeology and ethnology. If you keep strolling down the cobblestone streets you will get to the Ancient Theatre of Ohrid, the big Church of Saint Sophia with its stunning frescoes, and then uphill to Samoil's Fortress, the old castle with the best view over Lake Ohrid. Closer to the gallery you also have the Church of Saint Clement at Plaoshnik, the Icon and archaeological sites around it, and the lakeside promenade with cafes and small shops.
