The Municipal Gallery of Corfu is one of the island’s most engaging cultural spaces, housed in the elegant Palace of St. Michael and St. George. Its collection highlights Corfiot artistic creativity from the 19th century to the present, offering a vivid portrait of how local painters and sculptors interpreted the island’s landscapes, traditions, and cosmopolitan influences. Inside, visitors encounter works by prominent Corfiot artists such as Angelos Giallinas, whose watercolours capture the island’s atmospheric light with remarkable delicacy. The gallery also features pieces by Nikolaos Ventouras, known for his expressive lines and modernist approach, and by Spyridon Scarvellis, whose portraits reveal the social character of Corfu during earlier decades. These works form a narrative of local identity shaped by Venetian heritage, Ionian elegance, and Greek modernism. Temporary exhibitions add dynamism to the museum, often showcasing contemporary artists who explore themes like memory, urban life, and the island’s natural environment. The Municipal Gallery of Corfu is located in the eastern wing of the Palace of St. Michael and St. George at Kapodistriou 114, Kerkyra 491 00. Housed inside this grand British-era neoclassical structure, the art museum sits directly along the northern edge of Spianada Square in the heart of Corfu Town's UNESCO-listed historic center. Its setting inside the main palace complex places you right next to several famous sights. Sharing the very same building is the Museum of Asian Art of Corfu, allowing you to easily explore both cultural collections under one roof. Step outside into Spianada Square, the largest public square in Greece, and you will find the iconic Liston promenade, a 19th-century vaulted arcade filled with lively cafes and restaurants.Just across the square lies the entrance to the Old Fortress of Corfu, an imposing 16th-century Venetian sea castle offering sweeping views over the Ionian Sea. Strolling into the surrounding old town cobblestone streets brings you to the Church of Saint Spiridon, home to the island's patron saint, as well as Casa Parlante, a living history museum in a restored 19th-century mansion. Head a short walk west along the coast to see the Antivouniotissa Byzantine Museum or south toward Garitsa Bay to reach the Archaeological Museum of Corfu, making the gallery an excellent hub for exploring the town's top attractions.
