Palace of St. Michael and St. George

The Palace of St. Michael and St. George in Corfu is one of the island’s most elegant neoclassical landmarks, built in the early 19th century during British rule. Designed by Sir George Whitmore, it served as the residence of the High Commissioner and later housed the Order of St. Michael and St. George, whose insignia and symbolism still echo through the building’s architecture. Its grand façade, arcaded courtyard, and refined proportions make it a standout example of Regency style in the Mediterranean. Inside, the palace hosts the Museum of Asian Art, the only museum of its kind in Greece. Its collection spans thousands of years, with highlights including Japanese samurai armor, Chinese ceramics, Tibetan ritual objects, and rare Southeast Asian sculptures. The exhibits are arranged in former state rooms, allowing visitors to admire both the artworks and the palace’s original interiors—wooden ceilings, ornate fireplaces, and elegant reception halls. One of the most atmospheric spaces is the central rotunda, once used for official ceremonies. The palace also features lush gardens overlooking the sea, offering a serene contrast to its formal architecture. Together, the building and its collections create a rich cultural experience that blends Corfu’s European heritage with the artistic traditions of Asia.
