New Fortress of Corfu

The New Fortress of Corfu stands above the western side of the old town, a powerful reminder of the island’s strategic importance during the Venetian era. Built mainly in the late 16th century after repeated Ottoman attacks, it was designed to complement the Old Fortress and strengthen Corfu’s defenses. Its construction required demolishing parts of the medieval town, a sign of how urgently Venice sought to fortify the island. Inside, visitors can explore a network of stone corridors, vaulted rooms, and ramparts that reveal the fortress’s military sophistication. The massive bastions, named after Venetian nobles, offer some of the best panoramic views in Corfu—stretching over the rooftops of the old town, the harbor, and the distant mountains of Epirus. The scale of the walls and tunnels shows how the fortress functioned as a self-contained defensive complex capable of withstanding long sieges. One interesting feature is the British-era additions, including storage areas and barracks that reflect Corfu’s later role under British administration. The fortress also houses small exhibitions and hosts cultural events, using its atmospheric interiors as a backdrop for art and music. Although less visited than the Old Fortress, the New Fortress offers a quieter, more contemplative experience.
