Spianada Square, the vast green heart of Corfu Town, is one of the largest urban squares in Greece and a defining symbol of the island’s multicultural past. Its open expanse was shaped during the Venetian period, when fortification needs required clearing the area in front of the Old Fortress. Later, under French rule, it was redesigned in elegant Parisian style, giving it the refined layout visitors enjoy today. Walking across the Spianada, you’ll notice how each era left its mark. The most charming feature is the Liston, the arcaded promenade built by the French in the early 19th century. Its graceful arches and cafés evoke the feel of a European boulevard, and its name comes from the Venetian “lista,” referring to the list of nobles once allowed to stroll there. The square also hosts one of Corfu’s most unusual traditions: cricket. Introduced by the British, the sport is still played on the lawn, making Corfu the only place in Greece with an active cricket pitch. Around the edges, monuments, fountains, and shaded paths create a lively yet relaxed atmosphere. From the Spianada, visitors enjoy views of the Old Fortress, the Palace of St. Michael and St. George, and the elegant mansions lining the old town.

Spianada Square, also known as the Esplanade, is the vast, green public park located directly in the heart of Corfu Town, Greece. You can pin its location at Viktoros Dousmani 70, Kerkira 491 00, where it stretches gracefully between the historic old town and the sea. Considered one of the largest squares in Europe, this lively gathering place features manicured lawns, a neoclassical bandstand, and even a historic cricket pitch adopted from the British era. Because of its massive central position, stepping onto the square puts you directly adjacent to the island's most famous historic sites. Bordering its western edge is the Liston Promenade, an iconic French-built arcade filled with bustling outdoor cafes. Just past the promenade, you can wander into the narrow cobblestone streets leading to the Holy Church of Saint Spyridon and the Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral at Town Hall Square. Anchoring the northern boundary of the square sits the Palace of St. Michael and St. George, a neoclassical landmark housing the Museum of Asian Art and the Municipal Art Gallery. Looking east across the stone moat, you will see the towering sea walls of the Old Fortress of Corfu, a medieval castle offering incredible coastal views. Other cultural attractions within a minute's walk include the Maitland Rotunda, the Banknote Museum, and the hillside New Fortress slightly further west.
