Serbian Museum of Corfu

The Serbian Museum of Corfu is one of the island’s most moving historical landmarks, dedicated to a dramatic chapter of World War I. Housed in a traditional Corfiot mansion in the old town, it commemorates the arrival of the Serbian army in 1916, after its retreat through Albania. Corfu became a place of refuge, recovery, and reorganisation for tens of thousands of soldiers, and the museum preserves this story with rare authenticity. Inside, visitors can explore uniforms, weapons, medical equipment, and personal belongings that once accompanied soldiers during their arduous journey. A highlight is the collection of archival photographs showing daily life on the island: field hospitals, makeshift classrooms, military ceremonies, and scenes of camaraderie that reveal the human side of wartime exile. Letters and diaries offer intimate insight into the hopes and hardships of those who passed through Corfu. The museum also displays maps, documents, and medals related to the reorganisation of the Serbian army, which later departed from Corfu to continue fighting on the Macedonian Front. One of the most poignant sections is dedicated to Vido Island and the “Blue Tomb,” where thousands of soldiers who succumbed to disease and exhaustion were laid to rest in the sea.
