Maison Dieu Museum

About

The Maison Dieu in Dover, also known as Dover Town Hall, is a magnificent Grade I listed building with more than 800 years of history. Founded in 1203 by Hubert de Burgh as a hospice for pilgrims travelling to Canterbury and for the care of soldiers, it has served many roles over the centuries, from a military storehouse and prison to a civic centre and concert hall. Its name, meaning “House of God,” reflects its medieval origins, while its later transformation in the 19th century under the celebrated architect William Burges gave it the richly decorated Gothic interiors that survive today. For much of the 20th century it housed Dover Museum, and following major restoration it has reopened as a cultural and community venue, offering guided tours, exhibitions, and events that reveal its layered past. Visitors can admire the Connaught Hall with its spectacular painted ceiling, explore the Mayor’s Parlour, and discover stories of the people who shaped the town. The Maison Dieu remains a living monument to Dover’s heritage, combining medieval foundations with Victorian splendour and a renewed role at the heart of the community.
