The White Cliffs of Dover

About

The White Cliffs of Dover are one of Britain’s most iconic natural landmarks, rising up to 110 metres above the English Channel and stretching for eight miles along the Kent coast. Their dazzling façade of chalk, streaked with black flint, has made them a symbol of hope, defence, and national identity for centuries. Visible from France on a clear day, the cliffs have long marked Britain’s closest point to continental Europe, welcoming travellers and inspiring countless songs, poems, and artworks. Geologically formed during the Late Cretaceous period, they are part of the North Downs and share their origins with the chalk cliffs of Normandy. Today, much of the area is cared for by the National Trust, offering walking trails with panoramic views, wildlife habitats, and access to historic sites such as Fan Bay Deep Shelter and South Foreland Lighthouse. The cliffs are also a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, home to rare plants and nesting seabirds. Whether admired from the sea, explored on foot, or celebrated in culture, the White Cliffs of Dover remain a timeless emblem of Britain’s heritage and resilience.
