The Western Heights of Dover is a prominent historic fortification site located on the high ground west of Dover town, overlooking Dover Harbour and the English Channel. The complex includes the Drop Redoubt, a large pentagonal fortification with deep ditches and barracks, and the Dover Citadel, linked by sprawling defensive earthworks and tunnels. Nearby, visitors can explore the ruins of the 11th-century Knights Templar Church and the unique Grand Shaft—a triple spiral staircase that connects the Heights to the town below. The area is now a local nature reserve with well-marked walking trails offering magnificent views over Dover town, harbour, and coast. The Western Heights sit close to Dover town centre and are accessible from several council-operated car parks.
