Constable's Tower

About

Constable’s Tower is one of the oldest surviving structures within Dover Castle, offering a glimpse into the fortress’s medieval origins. Built in the 11th century and later modified, the tower once served as the residence of the castle’s constable—the official responsible for its defence and administration. Its robust stone walls and commanding position reflect the strategic importance of Dover as the gateway to England. Today, the tower stands as a quiet sentinel within the castle grounds, its weathered façade bearing witness to centuries of military and royal history. Though not always open to the public, its presence adds depth to the castle’s layered architecture and invites reflection on the lives of those who once guarded the realm. Constable’s Tower remains a symbol of authority and endurance, nestled within one of Britain’s most storied fortresses.

Constable's Tower
Location

Constable's Tower is located on the southwestern section of the outer curtain wall of Dover Castle in Kent. Built in the early 13th century to replace a northern gateway that was breached during the French siege of 1216, the tower forms part of the extensive medieval fortifications established by King Henry II in the late 12th century. Adjacent to the tower is the Constable's Gate, a fortified gatehouse with defensive structures such as portcullises and drawbridges. Nearby is the main body of Dover Castle, which overlooks the town and the English Channel. Visitors to this historic site can also explore the underground wartime tunnels, the Great Tower, and the expansive castle grounds, all situated within walking distance of Dover town centre and its ferry port.
