The Porte Cailhau is one of Bordeaux’s most picturesque monuments, standing proudly on the edge of the historic center near the Garonne River. Built in 1495 to commemorate King Charles VIII’s victory at Fornovo, it served both as a defensive gate and a ceremonial entrance to the city. Its striking Gothic and Renaissance architecture, with pointed arches, sculpted niches, and slender turrets, reflects the transition between medieval fortifications and Renaissance elegance. Rising to 35 meters, the gate once formed part of the city’s walls and offered protection while symbolizing Bordeaux’s prestige. Today, visitors can step inside to discover exhibitions about the city’s history and climb to the upper levels for views of the river and surrounding streets. The Porte Cailhau remains a beloved landmark, blending architectural beauty with historical significance, and offering a tangible link to Bordeaux’s rich past.

Porte Cailhau is located on Place du Palais along the Garonne River in Bordeaux’s historic center. This striking 15th-century medieval city gate once served as a defensive city entrance and is notable for its ornate Gothic architecture and multiple conical towers. Visitors to Porte Cailhau can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the river from its upper floors after climbing winding medieval staircases. Nearby are the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, the Bordeaux City Hall (Palais Rohan), and the famous Pont de Pierre bridge, the oldest stone bridge in Bordeaux.
