Pont de Pierre

About

The Pont de Pierre, or “Stone Bridge,” is one of Bordeaux’s most iconic landmarks, gracefully spanning the Garonne River. Commissioned by Napoleon I and completed in 1822, it was the city’s first permanent bridge, linking the historic center with the right bank. Its 17 arches are said to symbolize the number of letters in “Napoléon Bonaparte,” and the structure blends engineering ambition with elegant design. Built from brick and stone, the bridge stretches over 487 meters and offers striking views of Bordeaux’s riverfront, especially at sunrise and sunset. Once reserved for cars, it is now largely pedestrian and cyclist friendly, making it a scenic route for locals and visitors alike. The Pont de Pierre remains a symbol of Bordeaux’s heritage, embodying both its imperial past and its modern commitment to sustainable urban life.

Pont de Pierre is a historic stone bridge spanning the Garonne River in the heart of Bordeaux, linking the left bank’s old town at Cours Victor Hugo with the right bank Bastide district at Avenue Thiers. On the left bank it sits between the riverside quays and the medieval gate Porte Cailhau, just a short walk from Place de la Bourse, Rue Sainte-Catherine and the Saint-Michel district, while on the right bank it leads directly to Place de Stalingrad with its Blue Lion sculpture, cafés and access to Parc aux Angéliques along the riverfront. The bridge is served by tram line A and nearby riverfront bus routes, and offers easy pedestrian and cycling access between the historic centre and the Bastide promenade.
