Budapest Botanical Garden
About

The Budapest Botanical Garden, known as Füvészkert, is Hungary’s oldest botanical garden and a tranquil retreat in the heart of the city. Founded in 1771, it spans 3.5 hectares and showcases over 7,000 plant species, including rare and endangered varieties from around the world. The garden’s highlights include the 19th-century orangery and the recently restored greenhouse, which house impressive collections of tropical and subtropical plants, such as cacti, bromeliads, and orchids. The Palm House is particularly notable for its lush, rainforest-like atmosphere. Visitors can wander through themed areas like the Japanese Garden, featuring serene ponds and bamboo groves, or the arboretum, which contains over 800 species of trees and shrubs. The garden is also home to a living fossil, the ancient Wollemi pine, and offers a section dedicated to Hungarian riverside vegetation. Memorials throughout Füvészkert honor prominent botanists, and a charming café provides a peaceful spot to relax. Füvészkert is not only a botanical showcase but also a place to connect with nature and escape the city’s bustle.
