The Palais du Rhin, once known as the Kaiserpalast, dominates Strasbourg’s Place de la République with its imposing dome and neo-Renaissance grandeur. Commissioned by Emperor Wilhelm I and designed by Hermann Eggert, construction began in 1884 and was completed in 1889 under Wilhelm II. Inspired by the Palazzo Pitti in Florence, the palace was built to symbolize German imperial power after the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine. Its eclectic architecture, monumental scale, and surrounding gardens make it a striking landmark of the Neustadt district. Over time, the building has witnessed the shifting sovereignties of Strasbourg, embodying the city’s Franco-German heritage. Today, the Palais du Rhin is a protected Monument Historique, serving cultural and administrative functions while standing as a reminder of Strasbourg’s layered historyWikipedia+2.

Palais du Rhin is located on Place de la République in Strasbourg’s Neustadt district, a short walk north of Strasbourg Cathedral and the historic Grande Île city centre. It stands on the central square alongside the tree-lined lawns and war memorial of Place de la République, close to the National and University Library, the National Theatre of Strasbourg, the Opéra national du Rhin and several grand 19th‑century public buildings and boulevards.​
