The Observatoire Astronomique de Strasbourg is a landmark of scientific discovery and education, located within the city’s university campus. Established in the late 19th century, it was built to advance astronomical research and remains an important center for the study of the cosmos. Its elegant dome and classical architecture reflect the academic spirit of the era, while inside, historic instruments and modern facilities coexist, bridging past and present. The observatory has contributed to stellar catalogues and celestial mapping, reinforcing Strasbourg’s reputation as a hub of knowledge. Today, it continues to support research and teaching, while also welcoming visitors during special events and exhibitions. Surrounded by leafy grounds, the observatory offers a serene setting where science and heritage meet, inspiring curiosity about the universe and highlighting Strasbourg’s role in the advancement of astronomy.
Strasbourg France
Observatoire Astronomique de Strasbourg is located on Boulevard de l'Observatoire within the Observatoire-Botanique neighborhood in the Neustadt UNESCO World Heritage district, north of Place de la République and adjacent to the botanical gardens. Constructed from 1877-1881 under German imperial direction by architect Hermann Eggert, this neo-Renaissance complex comprises the iconic Grande Coupole housing a 49cm Repsold equatorial refractor telescope—one of France's largest—the L-shaped meridian pavilion with north-south domes for precise stellar observations, and the director's residence linked by corridors, all designed for vibration-free stability amid marshy terrain. Modernized post-1918 with electricity and a planetarium in the former Cauchoix meridian room, it preserves over 200 historic instruments in its "crypt of stars" museum while serving ongoing research and teaching. Nearby lie Parc des Contades and Jardin de la Place de la République to the south, Église Saint-Thomas, Palais du Rhin, National Library, and tram lines B/E at République stop, with 15-minute walks to Cathédrale Notre-Dame and Grande Île.
