Place Gutenberg is one of Strasbourg’s most historic squares, named after Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the movable-type printing press who lived in the city during the 15th century. At its center stands a bronze statue of Gutenberg, erected in the 19th century, symbolizing Strasbourg’s role in the spread of knowledge and culture across Europe. The square is framed by elegant Renaissance and Baroque façades, with the former Hôtel de Ville, now the Chamber of Commerce, adding architectural distinction. Over the centuries, Place Gutenberg has been a hub of civic life, hosting markets, fairs, and public gatherings. Today, it remains a lively meeting point, often animated by seasonal events and installations, while cafés and shops around the square invite visitors to linger. Its blend of history, architecture, and daily activity makes Place Gutenberg a vital part of Strasbourg’s urban identity, celebrating both the city’s past and its enduring spirit of innovation.

Place Gutenberg is located in the heart of Strasbourg's UNESCO-listed Grande Île historic center, just a 10-minute walk southwest of Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-Strasbourg and formerly known as Place Saint-Martin, the medieval political hub. At its center stands the bronze statue of Johannes Gutenberg by David d'Angers, erected in 1840 to honor the printing press inventor who lived in Strasbourg from 1434-1444, surrounded by Renaissance-style Chambre de Commerce et d'Industrie building, cafes, and the sloping-roofed 16th-century Hôtel de la Maison Rouge. Nearby attractions include Palais Rohan museums along Rue du Marché-aux-Poissons, Place Kléber square to the south, La Petite France quarter and Ponts Couverts about 15 minutes southwest, plus easy tram access at Langstross-Grand'Rue stop.
