Janiculum Hill (Gianicolo) is located just west of the Tiber River, above the Trastevere district and between the Vatican and the Monteverde neighborhood. Known as Rome’s “eighth hill,” it offers some of the best panoramic views of the city, including the domes and rooftops of central Rome and St. Peter’s Basilica. Nearby, you’ll find the picturesque Trastevere neighborhood (about 700 meters away), Villa Farnesina, the Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere, and the Galleria Spada, all within a kilometer. The hill itself features notable sites such as the Fontana dell’Acqua Paola, the Manfredi Lighthouse, the Church of San Pietro in Montorio with Bramante’s Tempietto, and the monumental Garibaldi statue. The area is easily accessible by several bus lines, and its peaceful, leafy avenues make it a popular spot for both locals and visitors seeking history, views, and a break from the city’s bustle.
