Nieuwe Kerk Haarlem is one of the city’s most distinctive post‑Reformation churches, built in 1649 to replace the ageing Sint Annakapel. Designed by Jacob van Campen, the architect behind Amsterdam’s City Hall, the church reflects a strict, classicist vision inspired by imagined depictions of the Temple of Jerusalem. Its most striking feature is the Renaissance tower from 1613, created by Haarlem’s master architect Lieven de Key, which originally belonged to the earlier St. Annakerk and now forms the church’s dramatic entrance. Inside, the Nieuwe Kerk is serene and geometric, with inward‑curving buttresses and clean architectural lines that emphasise light and proportion. Though modest compared to grander Dutch Protestant churches, it remains an important monument in Haarlem’s architectural story. Today, the church is used for cultural events, concerts and exhibitions, offering visitors a quiet, atmospheric space that blends history, artistry and community life.

Nieuwe Kerk Haarlem is located at Nieuwekerksplein 36 in the Vijfhoek district, one of Haarlem's charming historic neighbourhoods in the heart of the old town. Built in 1649 as the city's first purpose-built Protestant church by architect Jacob van Campen, it stands near picturesque streets like Korte Houtstraat and the retained Renaissance tower from the former Sint Annakapel. Just a short walk away lie the Grote Markt with St Bavo's Church, Frans Hals Museum, Teylers Museum, boutique-lined lanes, and cafés, with Haarlem Centraal station about 10-15 minutes on foot.
