Amsterdamse Poort is Haarlem’s last surviving medieval city gate and one of the city’s most atmospheric historic landmarks. Built in 1355 as part of the defensive walls, it once guarded the eastern entrance to Haarlem along the old road to Amsterdam. Its robust brick towers, pointed arches and fortified passageway still evoke the era when merchants, travellers and soldiers passed beneath its arches. Over the centuries, the gate witnessed Haarlem’s growth, the digging of the Haarlemmertrekvaart canal and the gradual disappearance of the city’s other eleven gates. Today, Amsterdamse Poort stands as a beautifully preserved reminder of Haarlem’s medieval past, marking the transition between the historic centre and the modern neighbourhoods beyond. Its photogenic silhouette, especially at sunrise or sunset, makes it a favourite stop for visitors exploring the city’s heritage.

Amsterdamse Poort Haarlem stands at the end of Lange Herenvest (Amsterdamse Poort 3), marking the historic eastern entrance to the city near the River Spaarne. Dating from 1355, this sole surviving city gate from Haarlem's original twelve anchors the northeastern edge of the old town, about a 15-minute walk from Grote Markt and Haarlem Centraal station. Nearby rise the Bakenesserkerk church and De Adriaan windmill (440m northwest), with the vibrant Spaarne riverbanks lined by cafés, mills, and the Teylers Museum a short stroll west, plus residential streets leading to the central museums, Grote Kerk, and pedestrian shopping lanes.
