De Adriaan Windmill is one of Haarlem’s most recognisable landmarks, rising gracefully above the River Spaarne. Although the current structure dates from 2002, it faithfully recreates the original mill built in 1779 on the foundations of a former defensive tower. Over the centuries, De Adriaan served multiple industries, grinding trass for mortar, tobacco, and later grain, reflecting Haarlem’s evolving economic life. After a devastating fire in 1932, the mill stood in ruins for decades until a dedicated restoration effort brought it back to life. Today, De Adriaan operates as a museum mill, offering guided tours that reveal the engineering behind traditional Dutch windmills and panoramic views over the historic city centre. Its elegant silhouette, riverside setting and rich story of resilience make it an essential stop for anyone exploring Haarlem’s heritage.

De Adriaan Windmill is located at Papentorenvest 1a along the scenic Spaarne River in Haarlem's historic center. This reconstructed 18th-century tower mill rises prominently on the northeastern edge of the old town, about a 10-15 minute walk from Grote Markt and Haarlem Centraal station. Nearby stand the Amsterdamse Poort gate just across the river, Bakenesserkerk church, Teylers Museum to the west, charming riverside cafés and walkways, plus easy access to the central pedestrian streets, St Bavo's Church, Frans Hals Museum, and vibrant shopping lanes.
