The Kenau and Ripperda Monument in Haarlem stands as a powerful tribute to two of the city’s most celebrated defenders during the Siege of Haarlem in 1572–1573. Sculpted by Graziella Curreli and placed near Haarlem’s central station, the monument depicts Kenau Simonsdochter Hasselaer and Wigbolt Ripperda side by side, symbolizing courage, resilience, and civic pride. Kenau, a shipbuilder and wood trader, became legendary for leading a regiment of women in the city’s defense, while Captain Wigbolt Ripperda, appointed by William of Orange, commanded Haarlem’s forces throughout the brutal siege. Their combined legacy embodies Haarlem’s determination in the face of overwhelming Spanish forces. Today, the monument serves not only as a historical reminder but also as an inspiring landmark welcoming visitors to the city, celebrating two figures whose bravery has become woven into Haarlem’s identity.

The Kenau and Ripperda Monument is located on Kruisweg, directly in front of Haarlem Railway Station in the northern part of Haarlem’s historic centre. This makes it an easily visible landmark for visitors arriving by train and a natural starting point for exploring the city. Nearby you will find Haarlem Railway Station itself, the green Kenaupark just a short walk away, the historic Frans Loenenhofje courtyard, and the edge of Haarlem Old Town with its picturesque streets and canals.
