East Slovak Museum

About

The East Slovak Museum in Košice is one of the oldest and most important museums in Slovakia, founded in 1872 and housed in a striking Neo‑Renaissance building. Its collections reveal the deep cultural layers of eastern Slovakia, from prehistoric settlements to medieval craftsmanship and regional folk traditions. The museum is also famous for one extraordinary treasure: the Košice Gold Hoard, a dazzling collection of more than 2,900 gold coins, medals, and chains discovered in 1935. It is one of the largest and most valuable hoards in Europe, and its display is a highlight for many visitors. Inside, the museum offers a rich journey through archaeology, natural history, and art. Exhibits include Gothic sculptures, historical weapons, and detailed ethnographic displays showing traditional clothing, tools, and domestic life. The natural history section presents minerals, fossils, and wildlife typical of the Carpathian region. The museum’s architecture is part of the experience: elegant halls, decorative ceilings, and period details create a refined atmosphere that enhances the exhibitions.

Location

Located in the Old Town at Námestie Maratónu mieru, right next to Košice’s famous Main Street, the East Slovak Museum is one of Slovakia’s oldest and most important museums. Founded in 1872, it’s housed in a striking neo-Renaissance building from the early 20th century with statues of Perseus and Vulcan on the facade. The museum holds over 500,000 objects across several exhibitions. Highlights include “Carpathian Nature” with fossils, minerals, and animal displays, and “Centuries in Art” featuring Gothic woodcarvings, silversmithery, and period furniture. The biggest draw is the legendary Košice Golden Treasure – nearly 3,000 gold coins, medals, and a Renaissance chain discovered in 1935 during building renovations. You can also visit a relocated wooden church from 1741 on the museum grounds. You’re in the cultural heart of Košice. Steps away is Hlavná ulica, Slovakia’s longest pedestrian street, lined with cafés, shops, and pastel facades. The towering St. Elisabeth Cathedral, the largest church in Slovakia, dominates the square, while the ornate State Theatre and musical fountain are just a short stroll. History lovers can explore Mikluš Prison, a medieval prison complex with “Košice Centuries” exhibitions on city life and guilds. Science fans should check out the Slovak Technical Museum on Hlavná Street, with its Planetarium, physics exhibits, and Aurel Stodola Energy Department.
