St. Michael’s Chapel in Košice is a small Gothic gem standing just beside the grand St. Elizabeth Cathedral, yet it holds a character entirely its own. Built in the 14th century as a cemetery chapel, it originally served as the city’s funerary church, which explains its intimate scale and the symbolic carvings that decorate its exterior. One interesting fact is that the chapel once stood at the centre of Košice’s medieval graveyard, and several original tombstones are still preserved around it. Inside, visitors find a serene single‑nave space with ribbed vaulting and a beautifully carved stone altar dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, depicted weighing souls—a reminder of the chapel’s original purpose. Gothic window tracery and fragments of medieval wall paintings add to the atmosphere. The upper gallery, accessible during special openings, offers a closer look at the vaults and the chapel’s architectural details. St. Michael's Chapel is located at Hlavná 21, on Main Street in the historic center of Košice, directly next to and slightly south of St. Elizabeth Cathedral in the city’s main square area. It is the second oldest building in Košice, a Gothic chapel originally built in the first half of the 14th century as a cemetery chapel inside the old town walls. The chapel is a protected monument and a national cultural monument, with a distinctive Gothic structure, a former ossuary in its cellars, and a rich history as a burial chapel for the dead. Today it is known as St. Michael's Church after its 2006 reconstruction, but it is still commonly called the chapel. Because it stands on Main Street right beside the cathedral, St. Michael's Chapel is at the very heart of Košice’s tourist area. Nearby attractions include St. Elizabeth Cathedral, the Singing Fountain, the Urban Tower, the State Theatre, the East Slovak Gallery, the plague column, the Lower Gate Underground Museum, Mikluš Prison Museum, Crafts Lane, and Jakab Palace. All of these sites are within a few hundred meters, making the chapel an easy and essential stop on any walking tour of Košice’s old town.
