Rodošto Memorial House

Rodošto Memorial House in Košice is a quiet but powerful reminder of the city’s connection to one of the most dramatic chapters in Hungarian history. The building is a faithful replica of the house in Tekirdağ (historically Rodošto), where Prince Francis II Rákóczi lived in exile after leading the early‑18th‑century anti‑Habsburg uprising. Košice built this memorial in 1906 to honour Rákóczi, who spent his final years far from home yet remained a symbol of national resilience. Inside, visitors find an evocative reconstruction of Rákóczi’s exile environment, including period furniture, personal objects, and documents that trace his political struggle and cultural legacy. The exhibition highlights the prince’s intellectual life, his correspondence, and the loyal companions who followed him into exile. A particularly interesting feature is the small chapel space, reflecting the spiritual dimension of his final years. The memorial also presents artefacts related to the repatriation of Rákóczi’s remains to Košice in 1906, an event that transformed the city into a key site of remembrance. Intimate and atmospheric, the house offers a rare glimpse into the emotional world of a leader living far from his homeland.
