Dominican Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

About

The Dominican Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is one of Košice’s oldest surviving sacred buildings and a key monument of the city’s medieval past. Founded in the 13th century, it reflects early Gothic architecture, though later Baroque modifications give it a layered, time‑worn character. An interesting fact is that the church originally stood outside the city walls, serving both the Dominican Order and travellers arriving from the south. After a devastating fire in 1556, it was rebuilt, preserving fragments of its earliest stonework. Inside, visitors encounter a serene, elongated nave with ribbed vaults and a high Baroque altar dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The side chapels contain richly carved altarpieces, devotional paintings, and remnants of medieval frescoes that hint at the church’s original appearance. Particularly striking is the pulpit, decorated with dynamic Baroque sculpture. The church also houses several tombstones of Košice’s prominent citizens, offering a glimpse into the city’s social history. Quiet and atmospheric, the Dominican Church remains a place where centuries of faith and craftsmanship meet.
