The Spa Museum in Piešťany offers a fascinating look into the history of one of Europe’s most famous spa towns, celebrated for its healing thermal waters and sulphuric mud. Housed in the elegant Kursalon building, the museum traces how Piešťany evolved from a modest bathing site into a renowned international resort visited by aristocrats, artists, and medical pioneers. An interesting fact is that the iconic “crutch‑breaker” symbol—depicting a man snapping his crutch in triumph—originated here as a testament to the spa’s therapeutic success. Inside, visitors can explore exhibitions on balneology, including early medical instruments, treatment devices, and archival photographs documenting the development of spa medicine. The museum also displays historic bathing equipment, elegant 19th‑century spa fashion, and promotional posters that reveal how Piešťany marketed itself across Europe. A highlight is the collection of thermal‑spring artefacts, showing how the town harnessed its unique natural resources. Models and documents illustrate the engineering behind the famous mud pools and therapeutic baths.

The Spa Museum, officially known as the Balneological Museum (Balneologické múzeum), is located at Beethovenova 5 in Piešťany, in the Kúpeľná dvorana (Spa Hall) building also called the Kursalon, which was built in 1893. It is situated on the edge of Town Park and is easily accessible from the historic town center. The museum is located on Spa Island (Kúpeľný ostrov), Piešťany's unique resort island in Europe and the largest health resort in Slovakia. On the island, you can see several historic spa buildings, including the oldest spa building, Napoleon's Bath (Napoleon's Kemp), built in the 19th century. Connected to the Spa Island is the beautiful Colonnade Bridge (Kolonádový most), also known as the Promenade Bridge, with the famous statue of a man breaking his crutch from 1894 – the symbol of the spa and part of the town's coat of arms. The bridge connects the Spa Island to the pedestrian zone in the historic town center. The Spa Park on the island features art sculptures and historic buildings, making it a perfect place for walking. Piešťany is world-famous for its medicinal geothermal water and sulfuric mud with extraordinary therapeutic effects on inflammatory disorders.
