Kolonádový most in Piešťany is one of Slovakia’s most iconic spa landmarks, a graceful functionalist bridge completed in 1933 to connect the town with the spa island. Designed by architect Emil Belluš, it was among the first fully covered pedestrian bridges in Europe, created to shield spa guests from wind and rain during their therapeutic walks. Its clean lines, long glass walls and elegant proportions still embody the optimism of interwar modernism. Inside the bridge, visitors can admire a small but meaningful cultural detail: the famous statue of the Crutch Breaker at the entrance, symbolising the healing power of Piešťany’s thermal mud. The interior corridor often hosts small exhibitions, adding a cultural layer to the walk across the Váh River. Kolonádový most (Colonnade Bridge) is a famous covered bridge over the Váh River in Piešťany, Slovakia, that connects the town center with Kúpeľný ostrov (Spa Island). Designed by architect Emil Belluš in the 1930s in a functionalist style, it is the longest covered bridge in Slovakia at about 142 meters and is a national cultural monument. The bridge is a major landmark and a convenient starting point for exploring Piešťany. Right at its entrance stands the iconic Barbreaker (Crutch Breaker) sculpture, the symbol of Piešťany’s spa tradition, created in 1933. Across the bridge, on Spa Island, you can visit the Balneological Museum (in the Kursalon), Napoleon’s Spa, the Spa Museum, the Crutch Breaker sculpture, the Eva Thermal Pool, and several spa hotels such as Thermia Palace and Spa Irma. On the town side, the House of Arts, City Park, and the main pedestrian center are close by, making the Colonnade Bridge a perfect spot to combine a walk with visits to museums, parks, and spa sights.
