The Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum in Innsbruck is one of Austria’s oldest and most comprehensive regional museums, founded in 1823 to preserve the cultural heritage of Tyrol. Its elegant 19th‑century building houses collections that span from prehistoric archaeology to contemporary art, offering a deep, layered portrait of the region. Inside, one of the most remarkable highlights is the Gothic art collection, including masterpieces by Michael Pacher and the celebrated “Altar of Schloss Tirol.” These works reveal the flourishing of Tyrolean craftsmanship during the late Middle Ages. The museum also holds an impressive array of Baroque paintings, Tyrolean portraits, and historical musical instruments, including rare violins and early keyboard instruments. The archaeology section traces human settlement in the Alps, featuring Roman artefacts from the ancient city of Aguntum and finds from prehistoric burial sites. Equally engaging is the natural history department, which presents Alpine geology, minerals, and fauna in a clear, accessible way.
Innsbruck Austria
The Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum is located at Museumstraße 15 in the centre of Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol in Austria, not in Salzburg. It sits in the historic city centre, close to the main square and easily reachable on foot from the Old Town. Near the Ferdinandeum, you can visit many of Innsbruck’s top attractions. The Goldenes Dachl, the imperial landmark of the city, is just a short walk away, as is the Old Rathaus (Town Hall) and the medieval streets of the Old Town. The Hofburg (Imperial Palace) and Hofgarten are nearby, and the Bellaria pleasure arcade is within a few minutes’ walk. The Mariastraße and the Annaheim district, with their baroque architecture, as well as the Innsbruck Christmas Market (in winter), are also close by. The Nordkette mountain range, accessible via the Nordpark and the Hungerburgbahn funicular, offers dramatic alpine views just a short distance from the city centre. Important: The Ferdinandeum has been closed for general renovation and expansion since July 2024 and is expected to reopen in 2027 or 2028, so visitors should check the official website before planning a visit. During closure, parts of the historical collection are shown at the Zeughaus (Armoury) in Dreiheiligen, a quarter of Innsbruck.
