Wilten Basilica

About

Wilten Basilica, one of Austria’s most beautiful Rococo churches, stands on a site linked to a Roman‑era settlement and an early medieval pilgrimage tradition. The present basilica, completed in the mid‑18th century, was designed by Franz de Paula Penz and is celebrated for its light, theatrical elegance. Its twin‑tower façade marks the entrance to a sanctuary long associated with the venerated statue of Our Lady of Wilten, a Gothic masterpiece that drew pilgrims from across the Alps. Inside, the basilica dazzles with soft pastels, gilded stucco, and flowing Rococo ornamentation. The ceiling frescoes by Matthäus Günther create a luminous narrative of Marian devotion, while the high altar frames the miraculous Madonna in a radiant architectural setting. The side chapels offer richly carved altars, delicate angels, and expressive devotional paintings that reward slow, attentive viewing. The basilica’s acoustics are exceptional, making its organ concerts a highlight for visitors.

Location

The Wilten Basilica, also called the Basilica of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, is located in the Wilten district on the southern outskirts of Innsbruck, Austria, near Pastorstraße 2, close to the Sill River gorge and about 20 minutes by tram or bus from the city center. The basilica sits in a historically rich area that was once the Roman town of Veldidena. Directly next to it is Wilten Abbey, a Premonstratensian monastery with baroque buildings founded in 1138, and the complex includes a small cemetery where noble Innsbruck families rest. The nearby Wilten Boys’ Choir is also famous throughout the region. From the basilica, you can easily walk or take a short tram ride to other attractions. Close by are the Localbahnmuseum (a charming railway museum), the Aussichtsplattform Drachenfelsen Bergisel viewing platform, and the iconic Bergisel Ski Jump, built for the 1964 and 1976 Olympics, with panoramic views from the top. A 20-minute walk leads to Bergisel’s wooded area, ideal for leisurely strolls.
