TAXISPALAIS Kunsthalle Tirol

About

TAXISPALAIS Kunsthalle Tirol is Innsbruck’s leading venue for contemporary art, known for its bold exhibitions and its commitment to international and local artistic voices. Housed in a former 19th‑century palace, the building blends historical elegance with a crisp, modern interior that provides a striking backdrop for experimental work. The Kunsthalle operates without a permanent collection, allowing it to focus entirely on changing exhibitions that reflect current artistic and social debates. Inside, visitors encounter spacious, flexible galleries designed to accommodate everything from large‑scale installations to video art and performance pieces. The curatorial approach is thematic and research‑driven, often addressing issues such as identity, technology, ecology, and globalisation. This makes each visit distinct, with exhibitions that challenge, provoke, or invite quiet reflection. A highlight is the Kunsthalle’s strong emphasis on emerging artists, giving space to voices that push boundaries in form and content. The mediation programme—talks, guided tours, and workshops—adds depth, helping visitors engage with contemporary art on multiple levels.

Location

The TAXISPALAIS Kunsthalle Tirol is located at Maria-Theresien-Straße 45 in the heart of Innsbruck’s city centre, on the famous Maria-Theresien-Straße, the main pedestrian shopping street running from the Triumphal Arch to the Old Town. It sits in the historic Fugger-Taxis Palace, one of Innsbruck’s earliest baroque noble palaces, just seven minutes from the main train station and five minutes from the Old Town. Near the TAXISPALAIS, you are in the cultural and shopping core of Innsbruck. The Anna Column (Annasäule), a striking baroque monument on Maria-Theresien-Straße, stands directly on the street outside the gallery, offering sweeping views of the Old Town and the surrounding mountains. The Triumphal Arch, one of Innsbruck’s most impressive monuments, is a short walk away at the southern end of the street, telling the story of the imperial Habsburg family through its reliefs and sculptures. Just a few minutes’ walk lead to the famous Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl), the medieval landmark of Innsbruck, and the Old Town with its historic streets, the City Tower, and the Court Church (Hofkirche) with Emperor Maximilian I’s tomb. The Hofburg (Imperial Palace) and many other Tyrolean State Museums, including the Ferdinandeum and the Museum of Tyrolean Folk Art, are also nearby, making this area a compact cultural hub.
