Court Church

About

The Court Church (Hofkirche) in Innsbruck is one of Austria’s most striking memorial complexes, built by Emperor Ferdinand I to honour his grandfather Maximilian I. Although Maximilian is not actually buried here, the church houses one of Europe’s most extraordinary cenotaphs: a monumental black marble tomb surrounded by 28 larger‑than‑life bronze statues known as the “Schwarze Mander”. These figures—ranging from King Arthur to real Habsburg ancestors—form a dramatic guard of honour and are among the finest Renaissance sculptures in the Alps. Inside, the white‑and‑black interior creates a solemn contrast that highlights the craftsmanship of the tomb’s reliefs, which narrate key episodes from Maximilian’s life. The Silver Chapel, added later, contains the silver‑framed tomb of Archduke Ferdinand II and his wife Philippine Welser, whose morganatic marriage became a famous Tyrolean love story. Visitors can also admire the church’s Renaissance organ, one of the oldest playable instruments of its kind, still used for concerts today.
