Cathedral of St. James in Innsbruck is one of Tyrol’s most elegant Baroque landmarks, rebuilt in the early 18th century after an earthquake damaged its medieval predecessor. Its most treasured feature is the Maria Hilf painting by Lucas Cranach the Elder, a work so beloved that it became a symbol of Tyrolean identity. The cathedral also houses the grand tomb of Archduke Maximilian III, richly decorated with marble and bronze, reflecting his role as Grand Master of the Teutonic Order. Inside, visitors are greeted by a luminous Baroque interior filled with stucco, gilded ornamentation, and frescoes by the Asam brothers, whose dramatic ceiling scenes celebrate St. James and the pilgrimage tradition. The high altar, with its dynamic sculptural forms, draws the eye toward the apse, while the side chapels reveal fine altarpieces and quiet devotional spaces. Don’t miss the ornate organ loft, whose instrument is known for its warm, resonant sound during concerts.

The Cathedral of St. James, also known as Innsbruck Cathedral, is in the heart of Innsbruck’s old town in Austria, close to the Imperial Palace and within easy walking distance of the city center. It is a Baroque landmark that sits on Domplatz, making it a convenient stop while exploring the historic core of the city. Around the cathedral, you can easily combine several major sights in one visit. Nearby highlights include the Imperial Palace, the Court Church, the Hofgarten, and the historic old town streets with their shops, cafés, and architecture. The City Tower and the famous Altstadt area are also close by, so the cathedral works well as part of a short walking route.
