Tiroler MuseumsBahnen

About

The Tiroler MuseumsBahnen in Innsbruck is a charming, hands‑on museum dedicated to the history of Tyrol’s local rail transport. Located in the former Stubaitalbahn depot, it preserves a remarkable collection of historic trams and narrow‑gauge vehicles that once connected Innsbruck with its surrounding valleys. For anyone interested in engineering, nostalgia, or Alpine mobility, it offers an unusually immersive experience. Inside, the highlights are the beautifully restored tramcars dating from the early 20th century. Their wooden interiors, brass fittings, and original signage evoke the elegance of early electric transport. Visitors can step into several vehicles, exploring driver cabins, benches, and mechanical details up close. The museum also displays maintenance equipment, uniforms, photographs, and technical drawings that trace the evolution of Tyrolean public transport. One of the most engaging features is the operational heritage fleet. On selected days, historic trams run through Innsbruck, allowing visitors to experience the city from the perspective of passengers a century ago. The contrast between vintage vehicles and modern urban scenery makes these rides especially memorable.

Location

The Tiroler MuseumsBahnen is located at Pater-Reinisch-Weg 4 in Wilten, a district in the south of Innsbruck, at the foot of Bergisel Hill, next to the current depot of the Innsbruck Transport Company (Innsbrucker Verkehrsbetriebe). The museum sits in the former Stubaitalbahnhof (Stubaital train station) restaurant building and is part of the historic “Museumslinie” (Museum Line) route in Innsbruck. This unique museum is dedicated to the history of Tyrolean local and street railways. It features a small indoor exhibition with photos, maps, and models, but its main attraction is the outdoor remise (depot) behind the museum, which houses a collection of historic trams and railway cars, including the famous “Museumslinie” vehicles that still run on special occasions. The museum is open from the first Saturday in May to the last Saturday in October, with guided tours and special tram runs on selected Saturdays. From here, you can easily reach the city centre by tram line 1, which connects Wilten and Bergisel to the Old Town, where the Golden Roof, Hofburg, Hofkirche, and the Museum of Tyrolean Folk Art are all within walking distance. The Alpine Zoo, Ambras Castle, and the Nordkette mountain range are also popular excursions a short distance from the museum, making Tiroler MuseumsBahnen a perfect stop for visitors interested in transport history, alpine scenery, and Innsbruck’s main cultural sights.
