The Basel Historical Museum is housed in the former Barfüsserkirche, a Gothic church in central Basel, Switzerland. You’ll find it on Barfüsserplatz, one of the city’s main squares, right in the Old Town. The church dates to the 13th century and was turned into a museum in 1894. The collection covers Basel’s cultural history from the Middle Ages to the Baroque. Highlights include the Basel Minster Treasury, medieval tapestries, the famous Basel Dance of Death fragments, stained glass, and historic furnishings. The soaring nave and cloister give the exhibits an atmospheric setting. From Barfüsserplatz, you’re in the heart of Basel. The square is a tram hub and has cafés, shops, and a lively market. Walk 2 minutes to Steinenberg for the Theater Basel and Elisabethenkirche, a neo-Gothic church. Basel’s Old Town surrounds the museum.
