The University of Basel Botanical Garden is one of the oldest in Switzerland, founded in 1589 and still thriving as a living laboratory of global plant diversity. Its charm lies in the contrast between historic structures and lush, carefully curated habitats. The garden is compact yet surprisingly rich, offering visitors a journey through ecosystems ranging from tropical rainforests to alpine rock landscapes. Inside the grounds, the tropical greenhouse is a highlight: warm, humid, and filled with giant leaves, climbing vines, and exotic blossoms. The Victoria House shelters the impressive giant water lily, whose floating leaves can reach over a metre in diameter. Nearby, the succulent house displays cacti and desert plants shaped by extreme environments, while the alpine garden showcases delicate mountain species that thrive in cooler, rocky terrain. One of the most interesting features is the garden’s role in scientific research. Many plants are part of ongoing studies in ecology, evolution, and conservation, giving the garden a quiet academic energy. Seasonal blooms—magnolias in spring, lotus flowers in summer—make each visit feel different.

The University of Basel Botanical Garden is at Spalengraben 8 in Grossbasel, right next to the university’s Petersplatz campus. Founded in 1589, it’s one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. The garden has four greenhouses with tropical plants, orchids, and cacti, plus outdoor collections of alpine plants, medicinal herbs, and old trees. Entry is free and it’s open daily. You’re a 2-minute walk from Spalentor, the most impressive of Basel’s medieval city gates. Pass through it to Spalenberg, a cobbled street with boutiques and galleries that leads down to Marktplatz in 7 minutes. The red Rathaus from the 16th century dominates the square. Petersplatz, a large open square with a market on Saturdays, is directly next to the garden. The University Library and the Peterskirche are on the square. From here, walk 5 minutes to the Basel Minster. The cathedral’s Pfalz terrace gives a wide view over the Rhine and Kleinbasel. The Kunstmuseum Basel is 10 minutes away via Petersgraben and St. Alban-Graben. It holds art from Holbein to modern masters. The Museum der Kulturen on Münsterplatz is also within a 10-minute walk. For a green detour, Kannenfeldpark is 12 minutes west by tram or foot. The large park has ponds, a rose garden, and old trees.
